Associated Texts
This tune began as a secular folk song, joined to the text, “Es ist auf Erd kein schwerer Leidn (There is on earth no suff’ring worse)” (see F.M. Böhme, Altdeutsches Liederbuch, No. 266). The tune was later joined to the spiritual text “Ich weiß mir ein Röslein hübsch und fein (I know of a rose both fair and fine),” whence it made its way to its proper text, “My Cause I Did to God Commit (Ich hab mein Sach Gott heimgestellt).”
